British Airways have launched a sale from Germany to New York, Boston and Chicago with a wide range of dates. With prices under £1000, these work out much better value than a redemption for around £600 plus a ton of Avios. You could also potentially upgrade these fares to First using Avios from 20,000 Avios one way – personally I would only ever do the outbound leg in First. Even though these fares must be booked by 9 September, I suspect they will be gone very soon. So don’t hesitate if you are interested! I can see limited availability in March and April but plenty in July 2020.

If you are interested in maximising tier points you should be able to reach 600 tier points quite easily. The basic return with the flights to and from Germany and routeing via Heathrow would be 360TPs not including any positioning flights. You could add in Helsinki which would give you another 160 tier points return. Add in one more US city to route via to Chicago or fly the positioning flights in Club and you have over 600TPs. That’s enough for BA silver which gives lounge access. You will need to make sure you get your four BA qualifying flights on the itinerary though.

American Airlines B777-300ER review

AA reverse herringbone seat on B777-300

You can fly on a choice of oneworld airlines such as BA, AA, Iberia or Finnair. First choice would be the BA refurbished B777s with the new Club Suites which start operating on selected flights to New York in October.

BA’s new Club Suite

If that is not an option I would choose either a B747 upper deck seat on BA or American Airlines on the B777-300 which has the reverse herringbone seats.

  1. I’m trying to get ITA to show me a route that would be Germany – London – Helsinki – Boston – Chicago so I can hit 600TPs but it won’t. Can you help at all?

  2. I’m also struggling too!? also the pic of 747 upper deck is actually an A380 😉

    • Well done for spotting the deliberate mistake. 😉 That will teach me not to label photos upper deck and then not look at them properly 🤣🤣

  3. I am also struggling to find a routing via Helsinki, has anyone achieved this yet?

  4. Am I mis-reading or are some of those permissible dates in the fare rules in the past?

  5. Great James, what dates?

  6. How could we book November flights for 2020? Aren’t they not released yet?l by the airlines?

  7. I’m sitting on 475 TP at the moment and my year runs out at the start of January. I’m probably on track to retain Silver, but I’m tempted to do a run to grab Gold.

Can anyone recommend a good travel agent that can facilitate the tier point run booking for me? I basically want to say “budget X (dunno, 1k / 1.2k), can travel Y (prefer NYC, Chicago, Hawaii (certain layovers would be ideal to see friends)) what can you do for me?”

OT, just done our 4th redemption LCY – JFK, coming back first EWR – LHR next week. Love this website and it’s tips!

  8. Hi does anyone know of a travel agent who can specialise in a tier point run? I’m sitting at 485 TP but would like to do a run, specifying budget and preferred layovers. Need someone familiar with ITA who can hook me up with the run! Is there a list of good TAs anywhere?
