Although I have mentioned this hotel before, there is now a special offer for the sister hotel which is more family orientated. It doesn’t include the overwater bungalows in the adults only hotel, but prices for a room with a private pool start at just £172 per night. See below for details.

While the Maldives are open to UK tourists and seem perfect for social distancing, it is currently red on the UK traffic light list. So if you want an alternative that is currently on the list, there is a hotel that offers the same overwater bungalows that could have come straight off a Maldivian island.

Stella Island Luxury Suites and Spa, is an Adults only hotel built around a lagoon-style pool that stretches over the entire resort. It gets a solid 5/5 on TripAdvisor which is not easy to come by. The hotel is on the island of Crete near Heraklion.

In the spa, guests can enjoy a great variety of services such as Sauna, Hammam, Jacuzzi, indoor heated pool, Massage rooms and Fitness room, along with the magnificent sea & pool views.

The hotel has a number of restaurants including a grill, buffet, Mediterranean and Asian.

There are several very luxurious rooms that are very similar to a Maldives-style Bungalow. These start with an overwater bungalow:

Even the inside looks like you could be in Asia or the Maldives

and progress to the Grand Overwater bungalow which has a jacuzzi

If you are not so worried about being over water but want privacy, there are the island villas with a private pool.

The prices are not quite as bad as the Maldives but they aren’t cheap. Prices for the Overwater Bungalow start at £347 with half board or £370 all-inclusive.  At least on half board eating out locally is very cheap. The flights will also be a lot cheaper to make up for it starting at £364 in Club per person. BA has deals in Club Europe to Greece.

You can find prices and more information about the hotel here.

The sister hotel, Stella Palace,  is now on offer with Secret Escapes. Secret Escapes is a members-only website with hand-picked hotels, holidays and exclusive offers. Spa at Stella Palace

Stella Palace is around 20 minutes from Heraklion Airport and is set on a private part of Analipsi Beach. It gets 4.5/5 with TripAdvisor.

Unlike Stella Island, it is more family-focused and all-inclusive. There’s a water park, spa, 2 lagoon-style swimming pools, 3 children’s pools and 2 tennis courts. If you go in the off season there is also an indoor pool.

  1. Thanks for sharing. Just had a look at some dates and Booking doesn’t have availability but find the site directly they do. Just a FYI

  2. Heraklion and others areas are in a partial lockdown until at least 1st September (ie curfew and music restrictions) and then new restrictions for the whole of Greece come into effect on 13th September. The latter will really only affect those who are unvaccinated.
