I will write this offer with some caveats. Firstly I am not suggesting anyone should be travelling now, and the dates are available over 9 months in the future. Secondly, obviously no one knows what will happen to the airline industry. However, the flights are bookable with American Airlines and given the US Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws and the likelihood of support for the airlines by the US government, it is one of the less risky purchases. It is widely believed that American Airlines are in reasonable shape to weather the storm. I would always recommend booking any flights with a credit card as it should offer protection if the airline were to go bankrupt and you could not fly.

Hawaii is one of my favourite places in the world and it is near the top of my list of places I plan to visit once the world opens up again. I was supposed to be flying next month to Hawaii, so I am quite tempted by this deal. You can fly to all the main islands: Honolulu (Oahu), Kahului (Maui), Lihue (Kauai)  and Kailua-Kona (Big Island). If you are not sure which to chose, have a read of my Hawaii hotel reviews for some inspiration:

There is a choice of departure points in Europe. Here are the relevant prices:

  • Stockholm £1266
  • Bucharest £1306
  • Luxembourg £1420
  • Copenhagen £1408
  • Sofia £1188
  • Prague £1383

If you are worried about tier points then the best starting points would be Sofia or Bucharest as both give 80 tier points between there and London each way. Building in a stop via New York JFK to Los Angeles adds an extra 140 tier points each way too. You can fly on pretty much any oneworld airline including BA, AA and Finnair.

You may find difficulty booking some of these departure points direct, so far Stockholm seems to be the cheapest and easiest option all round. Otherwise, it’s worth trying an online agent such as Expedia or Priceline. Flights can be booked most widely with American Airlines who are offering free changes on bookings for reservations made up to 15 April 2020 and British Airways whose ‘Book With Confidence’ commitment means you can change your destination, date of travel, or both, with no change fee. This is valid for all new bookings made up to 31 May for travel between now and 31 December 2020.

The rules are:

  • Book by: 6 months advance purchase and before 30 April.
    • NOTE: Book before 15 April for free changes (fare difference may still apply)
  • Travel: Outbound – permitted Tue through Thu. Inbound – permitted Mon through Wed.
  • Minimum stay: a Saturday night
  • Maximum stay: 12 months
  • Transfers:
    • 2 Permitted free in Europe in each direction
    • And – 2 transfers permitted in each direction free:
      • 1 free between BA/IB and b6 in BOS/JFK in each direction
      • 1 free between AA/AY/BA/IB and AS in LAX/PDX/SEA in each direction
      • 1 free between AA/AY/BA/IB and AM in Mexico in each direction
      • 1 free between AA/AY/BA/IB and AC in Canada in each direction
      • 1 free between AA/AY/BA/IB and HA in Hawaii in each direction
      • 2 free on AA/AY/BA/IB only in each direction
  • Stopovers: No

  • Changeable: Yes with no fees if booked by 15 April 2020

You can book direct as mentioned above or find the cheapest online travel agent price with Skyscanner.
