At the moment the prices going East are looking very inflated, partly due to Qatar launching a promotion and then removing all the promotional fares. There are no fares I would particularly recommend at the moment to Asia, so I think it is worth waiting until Qatar go back to some sense of normality price-wise, and hopefully, the other airlines will follow.

However, there are some fantastic deals to the US, Mexico, South America and South Africa for late this year and 2021 which I will look at.

The United States and Mexico deals

There are two deals that are similar price-wise from either Amsterdam or Barcelona. Amsterdam is an easier airport to get to from the regions in the UK and it’s a short journey.

Air Canada business class

The flights are available with Star Alliance where you have a choice of airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss, Air Canada and United. It is fairly tricky to advise on which to choose in terms of product as aircraft are likely to change between now and then. However, I would avoid Lufthansa due to the seats and probably Swiss too due to their terrible handling of refunds until recently. Swiss more modern B777 seats are pretty good but not on a par with Air Canada. Air Canada have the most consistent seats. United do have an excellent Polaris seat which hopefully they will prioritising the use of over older seats if they have reduced fleet size.

You can also fly with Skyteam which means if you collect Virgin miles, this would be a good choice (Virgin is looking in a better position now, see my other article). Choices include Delta, Air France or KLM. If you could get a route with Delta One seats such as on the A350, this would be my top choice. KLM have also improved a lot in recent years and I hear consistently good reviews of their service. However, Air France has good news seats on their B777 and B787 but I have heard mixed reviews of the service.

If you are looking for Oneworld, there are slim pickings to the US, but they may well match the prices. The best I have found so far are from Porto in Portugal that has East Coast from £1119 on Iberia.

Paris has deals on Star Alliance and Skyteam from £1127 East Coast and £1220 for the West Coast. Cancun is also available for £1145. Also available is Paris to New York on Air France and then Virgin via Heathrow for £1057.

South Africasouth africa

South Africa is one of my all-time favourite destinations, particularly Cape Town. The deals at the moment are a little limited, but there are a couple that I would consider:

  • Gothenburg to Johannesburg £1276 (KLM)
  • Barcelona to Johannesburg £1464 (KLM)
  • Milan to Johannesburg £1469 (Etihad)

Personally, I would probably wait a little to see what happens if you would rather fly on oneworld or Star Alliance.

You can book with KLM here and Etihad here or try Skyscanner.
