Qatar have another mini sale from Eastern Europe which has some great prices – but there are in line with what we would normally see from these departure points for many destinations. The couple of stand-outs are the Maldives and South Africa which do not usually go this low even from the favourite low cost Ex EU departure point, Sofia. These are all companion fares so two people must travel together. If you are on your own it is still worth a look as the solo prices are only a few hundred pounds more in most cases, which are still good value.
What are the prices?
The cheap fares are available from Budapest, Sofia, Warsaw and Athens. I have listed the cheapest fare starting point but you can check the others if you prefer to depart from a particular starting point.
|Destination||Price||From||Other cheap departure points|
|Ho Chi Minh City||£ 1,100.00||Athens||Budapest|
|Hong Kong||£ 1,150.00||Athens||Budapest, Warsaw|
|Kuala Lumpur||£ 1,200.00||Budapest|
What’s the catch?
There are a few catches to be aware of with these offers. I am currently writing this from Warsaw airport. If you are thinking of flying from Warsaw, I actually would recommend it in terms of ease of getting here and there are two airport hotels across from the terminal. I am in the Renaissance which I recommend. There are two flights a day to Warsaw with BA but they aren’t cheap if you want to travel in Club. The average price is around £300 though less in the sale. Of course, you could use Avios instead. The other disadvantage us that it is a short flight to Doha at around 4.5-5hours so if you take the evening departure at 21.55? You will end up with little sleep on this segment. They do use modern aircraft on the route though and have twice-daily flights. We flew on the B787 which you can read my review of here. (new review to follow).
From Sofia, the flight is also short and they use an A320 aircraft, this does not have flatbeds usually and instead the seats are sloping lie flat. But they do have two departure a day which means if you choose the lunchtime departure this actually shouldn’t be an issue for a short day time flight. You still get the full Qatar service and given the savings, you may feel it is worth it. You can position to Sofia with BA who fly there daily. There have been some decent Club Europe deals recently at around £240 – this would get you an additional 160 tier points return making a total of 720 for the trip. Athens also has the A320 with these seats but they have evening departures which means a night flight on non fully flat seats.
The other catch is that if you are after BA Tier points, Athens only gets 80 TPs to Doha making a total of 360 TPs return for the routes to Asia versus 560 for the other departure points.
