While you may not be travelling as much at the moment, if you are considering any staycations or short breaks it is worth looking at a status match. Since virtually all hotel chains and airlines have extended status, now is a great time to do a status match without worrying about it taking away stays to requalify for your current status.

Both Marriott and Hilton have made it very easy. On top of this many hotels in the 4* and lower 5* category are much cheaper than usual. This is particularly true in city centres which can be used as a base for exploring pricier areas of the countryside. For example, at Heathrow, the newly refurbished Hilton Garden Inn is £47 a night at a weekend or the Hilton Olympia in London which I quite enjoyed is £57 a night on a Saturday in September.

For Marriott, there is the Sheraton Heathrow for £59 a night or the luxury The Dixon, Tower Bridge by Autograph in London for £109 a night.

Hilton – stay 9 nights to get Diamond status

Hilton is giving double nights credit so for every night you stay you get 2 qualifying nights. I wrote about that and the double points offer here.

This means it easier than ever to complete a status match challenge. Even if you don’t think you would make the full number of nights you get the Gold perks for the 90 days. So if you have a Hilton stay coming up, it could be worth applying anyway.

When can I do the status challenge?

You must apply between 8 September and 31 December 2020. You then get 90 days from the date of registering to complete the challenge.

When do you get the new status until?

  • 31 March 2022

What do I need to get a match?

You will need to have some sort of status with pretty much any major chain of hotels. This should be enough to get you a Gold status match, however, Hilton is suitably vague about what they count as a mid-tier status so there is always no guarantee. You also need to have at least one recent stay with the chain that you can prove. So having status through a credit card is not enough without a stay. You also need a Hilton Honors account before you apply as you will need to be logged in.

How many nights do you need to qualify?

  • In 90 nights
    • Diamond 9 nights
    • Gold 5 nights

What are the main perks of the tiers?

As well as the perks below, it means you can get one night free when you redeem 5 nights on points, so you will only need enough points for 4 nights.

Gold:

  • 80% Bonus Points on stays
  • Space-available room upgrades
  • Free continental breakfast
  • Milestone Bonuses

Diamond

  • 100% Bonus Points on stays
  • Space-available room upgrades
  • Free continental breakfast
  • Milestone Bonuses
  • Executive lounge access
  • Diamond status extension

Marriott Bonvoy – Gold from just 5 nights

For this status challenge, you need to nominate yourself for either the Gold Elite challenge or the Platinum Elite challenge depending on the level of status that you are matching. If you have Hilton Gold or above you can match to Marriott Platinum. For Accor Live Limitless Gold members are matched to Marriott Bonvoy Gold, while Platinum and Diamond members get Platinum. World of Hyatt Explorist members are matched to Marriott Bonvoy Gold while Globalist get Platinum. IHG Rewards Club Platinum and Spire Elite members are matched to Marriott Bonvoy Platinum.

Once you have been accepted you then get Gold or Platinum status for the duration of the 90-day challenge. It takes around 10 days to register.

When can I do the status challenge?

You get 90 days from the date of registering to complete the challenge. There is no end date but they are only likely to offer it to a limited amount of applications.

How many nights do you need to qualify?

As Platinum that I got from a status match, I find the 4pm late checkout which is guaranteed, very useful compared to Hilton’s Diamond 2pm late check out which I find is almost always refused at the luxury hotel brands.

  1. Sadly Gold in Marriott is pretty worthless. No breakfast for example.

Can’t see too many people doing 15 nights in 90 for Platinum currently.
