While fares to the US are not particularly great from the Uk with the exception of some BA Holidays deals, there are some amazing ex EU fares. One of the safest and hassle-free ways to travel ex-EU is from Dublin. There is still a decent deal on but it doesn’t cover a lot of the West Coast apart from Los Angeles and Seattle.

So here is another option for a great-priced ex-EU. Madrid and Barcelona are two of my favourite cities so these could make a nice two-center break with a night or two in the starting city before heading off to the US. With the reasonable stopover fee of €150 you could also turn it into two separate breaks by paying the fee. So you do a trip to Madrid using your positioning flights first, then you return to London on the first part of your ticket having built in a stopover until you want to fly to the US from the UK.

The fares are available from Madrid, Barcelona and a few other Spanish airports with varying prices. Here are some example business class prices:

  • San Francisco £1199
  • Los Angeles £1214
  • Seattle £1173
  • San Diego £1232
  • Dallas £1173
  • Denver £1253
  • Chicago £1188
  • Miami £1123
  • Orlando £1172
  • New York £1062
  • Boston £1169
  • Toronto £1193
  • Montreal £1197

You can travel on Iberia non-stop from Madrid (read my review of flying to the US on Iberia’s A350 from Madrid here). If you don’t fancy that or want extra tier points you can fly on American or BA via Heathrow.

  1. Of course booking.com would do this 3 days after I lay down £1400 on a non refundable booking! On the upside, and presumably due to masses of complaints, the avios payment timescale has been reduced from “up to 12 weeks after your stay” ( and invariably still need chasing up in my experience) to “avios will be credited to your account approximately 35 days after the final day of your booking”

Those are some good prices J return to the US and can definitely see us making use of them during ’22
