I am currently doing less offer articles than before, even though there are quite a few offers around for well into next year. If you would like to see more offer articles, let us know in the comments below or on social media. I will also take a look at the best hotel offers later in the week.

So would I recommend booking at the moment? Well, firstly I would be wary of places such as New Zealand that have take a very firm stance about closing borders. They have been quoted as saying that they may not reopen border until a vaccine is found. Secondly, I would be looking at how viable the airline seems – if there is any doubt try to minimise your exposure by using a credit card and looking at a holiday so you can pay a deposit rather than the full amount. For most companies, you can just add a single night at a hotel to make it a holiday. Finally, in terms of timing, I would definitely err on the side of caution. If borders reopen to certain countries and your flight still goes, but the UK is still barred from entry, the airline does not have to give your money back. They have been offering vouchers so far, but whether that will continue as time goes on we don’t know.

I have a flight in November which I am assuming is likely to happen. I am booking new flights from December onwards and turning them into a holiday. One watch out is that if you book an ex EU holiday with BA, you can only deal with the Bremmen office for queries and changes. With their ridiculously short working hours (they close for lunch!) they are very difficult to get hold of at the best of times. So make very sure you don’t make any mistakes!

Long haul flights

Destination: United States and South America

Maui

There are very similar offers from a number of European departures points. So which should you choose? Sofia gets you an extra 160 tier points and BA currently fly direct. Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam get fewer tier points but are much quicker and easier to get to. Dublin and Paris can be very pricey as there is not much competition unless you are willing to go low cost. Amsterdam would be my pick out of the closer airports due to the ability to do a back to back without having to leave the gate (get back on the same plane to go back to the UK) and the price of the flights from the UK.

The rules vary slightly but are generally 6 month advance purchase, book by 30 April, midweek travel, minimum stay Saturday night and no stopovers.

Average prices and fares are

  • Dublin
    • West Coast (including Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix)  £1250
    • Hawaii £1537
    • Available on Sky Team, Oneworld and Star Alliance

“Sofia gets you an extra 160 tier points and BA currently fly direct. Given the number of Romanian nationals in the UK I can’t see there being a lack of flights there.”

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, and not at at all convenient for Romanians transitting to the UK!

    • Thanks. Corrected. For some reason I always transpose Bulgaria and Romania. I should know I was only there a few weeks ago!

Please do more offer articles if there are new ones. I might not actually book any, but it’s fun trying! I managed to get the Sofia to Hawaii £1186 via AA quite easily, and it involves a night stop in London on the way out, so breaks things up nicely. You can also easily open jaw the Hawaii destinations. Maybe I will book it after all…
