American Airlines to Launch Direct Flights from Edinburgh to New York JFK
Following the success of the Edinburgh-Philadelphia service, American Airlines has announced a new seasonal route from Edinburgh to New York JFK, daily from 8th March to 24th October 2026.

American will operate the route with its brand-new Airbus A321XLR, marking the first time a US airline has flown the type on an international service. The aircraft will first enter service on New York–Los Angeles from 18th December 2025 before debuting internationally on this route in March.
The narrowbody aircraft has 20 Flagship Suite Business Class seats, each with doors and direct aisle access.
There are 12 Premium Economy seats in a 2-2 layout with winged headrests and extra legroom. Economy has 123 seats.
American will be the only Oneworld airline to operate a direct service from Edinburgh to New York. Remember, you can book with Avios via BA and receive Oneworld benefits when flying.
AA will also operate its Philadelphia-Edinburgh route from 24th March to 24th October 2026 using a Boeing 787-8.
These are two of the seven new transatlantic services American has announced for 2026, including new destinations such as Budapest and Prague. As American takes delivery of more A321XLR aircraft, there are plans to use them on additional transcontinental and international routes.
This new link will provide Scotland with three non-stop connections to the New York area next summer, joining Delta’s daily Edinburgh-JFK service and United’s Edinburgh-Newark service.

When searching for American flights, make sure you are looking for direct flights and double-check the aircraft type. You can easily spot the direct flight with the black ‘Flagship Suite’ bar:
Premium seats average £8,200, whereas Premium Economy seats average £2,600, and Economy seats average £1,200. These prices are a lot more than the indirect options bookable via Heathrow operated by BA, but you’re paying for the convenience and Flagship Suite seat.
