A new gourmet meal box in Business on Air France short-haul flights

I have always enjoyed the catering on Air France, but the latest change is not positive in my eyes. Although some flights like Paris are short, it still puts the airline behind its competition with short-haul catering.

On 1 February 2024, Air France started offering Business customers travelling on short-haul a “gourmet” box as the catering.

On flights leaving before 10 am, breakfast is served, consisting of sandwiches with adapted fillings such as smoked salmon and cream cheese with dill on white bread, accompanied by a breakfast pastry. After 10 am, you get ‘signature’ sandwiches  such as smoked paprika chicken and tarragon vegetables on granary bread, as well as typically French sweets and desserts such as a calisson, a cannelé or a tropézienne.

Chef François Adamski has created tasty sandwiches which are easy to eat on these short flights, selecting local and seasonal produce, meat, poultry and dairy products of French origin, PDO cheeses and fish from sustainable fisheries.

These menus will change every month, and the food is presented in a meal box. However, they do at least promise to serve wine and champagne in a glass.

If you were thinking that the boxes seem very wasteful, apparently Air France, and with the support of Servair, will ensure that the boxes are subject to “mechanization” which is a natural biological process in which organic matter is broken down in order to be recycled into energy.

British Airways changes – London Gatwick to Jersey launch & Tel Aviv downgrade

Gatwick to Jersey resumes

British Airways will restart flights from London Gatwick to Jersey from 23 May 2024 as follows:

BA2530
  • LGW 1020-1125 JER (Thu)
  • LGW 1035-1140 JER (Tue & Wed)
  • LGW 1605-1710 JER (Fri)

BA2531

  • JER 1255-1400 LGW (Thu)
  • JER 1305-1410 LGW (Wed)
  • JER 1310-1415 LGW (Tue)
  • JER 1830-1935 LGW (Fri)

Currently, BA are also due to be continuing with five flights a day from Heathrow as well. The Gatwick route was moved to Heathrow during Covid times. It will be interesting to see if there will be any adjustments to the overall numbers of Jersey flights across Heathrow and Gatwick in the future.

BA downgrades aircraft and tier points for Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv

Frequent flyers have been making quite a noise about BA’s changes to their Tel Aviv flights. These are due to resume on 1 April after being suspended after the 7 October attacks in Israel. Quite a few airlines, such as Air France, Lufthansa and Ryanair, have already resumed.

BA has announced that they will make Tel Aviv a short-haul route in every respect – the aircraft, the service AND the tier points. Until it was suspended, the service was on a long-haul aircraft with proper flatbeds and received the full Club World service.  Now, they will fly four times a week on an A320 with a stop in Larnaca on the outbound for 45 minutes to change crew. You will not be permitted to leave here.

Although this is being presented as a permanent change, I’d be surprised if it stays that way when capacity returns to the route. There was a reason why BA used to put a long-haul aircraft on this route, and that was down to what the competition was doing, with both Virgin and El Al offering full long-haul aircraft and service. As some airlines have not resumed their services, BA can afford to pick up the demand with an inferior product until things return to normal with all airlines back at a similar capacity to before 7 October. Otherwise, I can’t see why anyone would choose BA for business class on this route once things return to normal. Virgin are also due to resume on 1 April with their full business class seats, so I would choose them every time.

However, what does look like a permanent change is the downgrade of tier points from 140 TP each way in business class to just 80 tier points, which is what other short haul+ routes get. This does not start until 31 March 2025, which suggests that it will be here to stay.

The flights do not appear to be on sale yet on ba.com

I heard that a reason for the downgrade of BA flights to TLV is flight crews not wanting to stay overnight if the flight is designated long-haul

The British Airways flights to Tel Aviv are now on sale. The flights appear to be a bit cheaper for a cash purchase but they are charging the same amount of Avios as before when they used the proper long haul aircraft! This is bad considering there will be no entertainment system or lie flat beds. It is an early flight so it was nice to have a snooze onboard.

Aah they weren’t on sale when I looked yesterday. I did wonder if they’d reduce the price

I read yesterday that Virgin are not flying to Tel Aviv until September. I checked their website it looks like that is correct as I wasn’t able to search for a flight until then.
