Etihad Airways is encouraging travellers to start planning their next trip, once travel restrictions ease, with the launch of ‘Etihad Travel Voucher’.

Customers who purchase an Etihad Travel Voucher between 10 and 24 June 2020 will receive an extra 50% cash value for future travel from 1 August 2020 onwards, valid for two years. Vouchers are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Robin Kamark, Chief Commercial Officer, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Now, more than ever, we want to give the world something to look forward to. Valid for two years, Etihad Travel Voucher will give our guests plenty of time to plan their future trip, and with 50% extra credit, they will spend less on that well-deserved break”.

Etihad Travel Vouchers are available in increments of USD 250 to a maximum of USD 65,000. The value of the purchased voucher plus 50% extra credit will be added to a Travel Bank account for future redemption on flights, upgrades and extras.

So the question is, should you buy one? In terms of your money being safe, Etihad have been in financial difficulty for a while. However, I would say it is highly unlikely the UAE government would let them go bust, but obviously there is no certainty.

Obviously you need to want to go somewhere that they fly, and there is no guarantee that all their routes will resume. Etihad have made a lot of cutbacks in their service but they have good seats in business class on the A380, reasonable on the B777s and their First Class Apartments are amazing. Other risks will be if Etihad keep their pricing high for some reason.

If you are happy to be flexible or have a booking you want to upgrade for example, then this could be an extremely good deal. As always I would do plenty of research of what you are thinking of using the voucher for, before you commit to purchase.

To purchase Etihad Travel Vouchers, you will need to sign-up to Etihad Guest, the airline’s loyalty programme, which is completely free. You can do that here.

Then you will need to phone your local Etihad Airways Contact Centre The list of local contact centres is available at

Risky to be honest. Etihad’s J class product varies widely in quality and the lounges are average at best. It’s also hard to guess what the pricing strategy will be, and as your money is locked into one airline (and booking direct rather than through an agent which is usually cheaper) you are at the mercy of their pricing policies. If you’re going to take a punt, use a credit card for section 75 protection. Personally, I doubt a smaller player like Etihad has much of a future in the medium term. Like a lot of people I’ve been expecting them to be bought out by Emirates. Not any more.
