We regularly pick out the best status matches for you in our news coverage, but why would a status match be worth your attention? This year, there has been a wave of status matches offered due to many people looking to switch airline alliances. Status matches are becoming more important than ever, especially as changes to airline loyalty programmes have made status harder to earn the traditional way.
Status matching is an ideal way to get benefits for a trip, whether for a one-off trip or a switch in alliances. You can use your existing status to gain equivalent benefits elsewhere and enjoy extras like priority check-in, extra baggage, lounge access and more.
Here’s everything you need to know about status matches and how they could become part of your loyalty strategy. Part 2 of this guide (published soon) will cover the top airline status match options currently open.
In this post:
What is a Status Match?
Once you have status in one airline, you can often use that to ‘match’ your status to another airline. They are essentially a shortcut to elite benefits with an airline you don’t hold status with.
Status is based on your existing tier with the competitor programme. Provide proof of your status to receive comparable status with another airline.
Status Matches vs Status Challenges
Status Challenges are similar to status matches with the added caveat of a requirement to fly a certain number of miles, bookings or spend to match your status. Some airlines will grant temporary elite status (typically 90–180 days). To keep it, you must complete a minimum requirement, like flying X miles or earning Y spend.
For example, if you hold British Airways Silver status (Oneworld Sapphire), a match with a SkyTeam or Star Alliance carrier could get you mid-tier status.
Free Vs Paid
Some status matches are free (although most require proof of future travel or have a challenge associated with them), but others have a fee. Depending on the airline and tier matched, expect to pay anywhere from £36 to over £300. Many matches come without a fee but have several requirements that could be more expensive.
Official Vs Unofficial
Most status matches are official. The airline advertises a status match and has a dedicated application page, with instructions on what proof you need to provide and whether there are any requirements to match.
An unofficial match is when you approach an airline or hotel company with proof of your status with a competing airline or hotel group and ask to be immediately upgraded to the equivalent level with that company. This is usually done via email. statusmatcher.com is a great resource for finding these (more on that below).
How do Status Matches Work?
Your current elite status will not be transferred over to the new airline. Instead, you will hold status with both frequent flyer programmes. You continue to earn points or tier miles in the new programme while keeping your original status with the airline you matched from.
Hotel to Airline Status Matches
Some airline status match promotions allow you to match your hotel status! Cross-programme hotel status matches are also common during promotional periods (more on that in a future guide). Part 3 of this article will cover hotel status matches in depth including hotel-airline matches.
Why A Status Match?
If you tend to fly a variety of airlines, then it is worth having status across the three main alliances.
For you:
- You’re unhappy with your existing loyalty programme
- Another loyalty programme offers better benefits
- Your circumstances have changed
- A new airline is offering flights out of an airport near you
- Your airline is moving alliances, merging with another airline, or going out of business
- You want to try another alliance, but don’t want to start from the bottom up or commit to move forever
- You have a big trip in mind, and your chosen alliance does not fly many routes in that area
- You want status with multiple airlines to give more choice of carriers
- Your elite status is expiring
For the airline:
There are several reasons airlines offer status matches.
- To attract frequent flyers to switch brands
- To encourage brand loyalty
The Power of Airline Alliances
Knowing about airline alliances is essential before exploring status matches. There are three main airline alliances: SkyTeam, Star Alliance, and Oneworld.
Most airlines are part of an airline alliance, and status with that airline gives equivalent benefits across the alliance. Our guide to airline alliances explains this.
With just three main airline alliances, matching your status from one alliance to another will give you benefits across two or two-thirds of alliances and open up a vast range of airlines.
Some opportunities may not be obvious airline programmes for you to join, but due to their alliance membership, they may bring benefits. A sweet spot is to match with a niche carrier and get status across the whole alliance.
For example, if you have Miles&More Senator status from Lufthansa, this matches Star Alliance Gold status. You will get Gold benefits across all Star Alliance airlines, including lounge access, extra baggage allowance and priority boarding. If you were to match your Miles&More status during a status match offer to another alliance, you would also have similar benefits across all airlines.
If you have status with one alliance but not with another, flying with that airline can become off-putting. Similarly, if you’re considering switching alliances but don’t want to start at the bottom, options exist!
Looking for Status Match Opportunities
Many airlines open and close status match opportunities throughout the year, whereas others offer one-off, limited-time matches.
The best way to find status match opportunities is through our regular news articles and by signing up for TLFL emails.
Keep an eye on airline loyalty websites ‘Offers & Promotions’ sections—some status matches are published quietly.
statusmatcher.com is a great site for sharing status match ideas. It includes reports from others who’ve applied for status matches, so you can see if you will likely be approved. Contributors advise on how best to contact the airline for a status match and the required documents.
statusmatch.com is a go-to site for finding status matches. Many paid status matches (and some free ones) are done via the statusmatch.com website.
How to Apply for a Status Match
1. Make sure you’re a member of the programme you’re matching from and to. Matches won’t be processed unless you hold an active membership with both. You’ll usually be able to match even if you’ve just signed up.
2. Take a photo of your valid frequent flyer card or a screenshot of your membership account. You may also need a statement and proof of future travel. Each match has different requirements. Make sure you also have your frequent flyer number on hand.
3. If it’s an official match, apply via the airline’s dedicated status match page. For unofficial requests, email the airline’s loyalty team with your documents and a polite request to match. Include your frequent flyer numbers for both programmes.
4. Track your application. Some airlines may allow you to do this when logged into your loyalty account. If you don’t hear anything, consider following up with the airline. Official timelines vary from a few days to a few weeks.
5. If the match includes a challenge, review the terms carefully. Know exactly what requirements you’ll need to meet and make sure you can complete these within the allotted time.
Advice
Before entering a status match, consider your timing, eligibility, and long-term strategy.
Choose Wisely
Most airlines limit you to one status match every 3–5 years, and some only allow one match ever. Make sure you match at the best time for you, whether it’s because you don’t think the match will be available ever again or you’ve reached the status level you’ve been aiming for with one alliance and want to reciprocate this with another.
Time it Right
If the status match is not a time-sensitive promotion, you can time it wisely. For many matches, signing up after June is often a good time (although this varies massively).
You could also consider a status match to match your expiring status!
Before signing up, plan exactly how you will meet the requirements of a challenge so you don’t waste money.
Eligibility
Not all elite status qualifies. You may be excluded if your current status was earned via a match, a promo, or a status challenge. Some airlines also restrict matches to residents of specific countries or regions.
Final Words
Status matches offer a risk-free way to try out the perks of another airline or alliance without losing your current status. Make the most of what could be a very rewarding switch.
