Virgin Voyages Launches Status Match for Airline and Hotel Elites

Virgin Voyages has launched one of the broadest status match offers currently available, extending instant onboard perks to travelers with elite status across 35+ airline, hotel, and cruise loyalty programs.
The adults-only cruise line says the offer potentially applies to around 50 million elite travelers, including members of major programs familiar to points and miles readers.
Matched travelers receive Virgin Voyages “Blue Extras” on their first sailing, which include:
-
Complimentary specialty coffees
-
Free laundry service
-
Invitations to exclusive cocktail events
-
Priority assistance from Sailor Services
-
Access to select Virgin Voyages offers and rewards benefits
These perks stack on top of Virgin Voyages’ standard inclusions, which already cover dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and entertainment.
Eligible Programs
Virgin Voyages is matching elite status from a wide range of programs, including:
-
Airlines: American AAdvantage, Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Virgin Australia Velocity
-
Hotels: Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards
-
Cruises: Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor, Norwegian Latitudes, Carnival VIFP
Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia members are explicitly included, reinforcing Virgin’s cross-brand loyalty push.
-
Apply by: January 16, 2026
-
Book by: March 31, 2026
-
Eligible sailings: Now through Summer 2027
There is a catch, though, the status match is only valid for one Virgin Voyages sailing. You’ll receive the “Blue Extras” on your first eligible cruise, but this does not grant ongoing loyalty status with Virgin Voyages.
Cruise lines typically don’t recognize airline or hotel elite status. Virgin Voyages is an exception here, offering immediate benefits without requiring prior cruise loyalty. Amex Cuts Emirates Skywards Transfer Rate Again

American Express has announced another devaluation to its Membership Rewards partnership with Emirates Skywards.
From 1 February 2026, the transfer rate will fall from 4:3 to 2:1, meaning two Membership Rewards points will now be required for every one Skywards mile.
This follows a series of negative changes to Emirates Skywards and represents a 50% devaluation from the original 1:1 rate that existed until August 2024.
The impact is significant. An Emirates Business Class one-way from London to Dubai typically costs around 87,000 Skywards miles.
-
At 1:1 (pre-Aug 2024): 87,000 MR points
-
At 4:3 (current): ~116,000 MR points
-
At 2:1 (from Feb 2026): 174,000 MR points
That’s double the points required compared to less than two years ago, before factoring in Emirates’ high surcharges, which often exceed £400 per direction from the UK.
Emirates Skywards is increasingly a programme for paid Emirates flyers, not credit-card points collectors. Between restricted First Class access, limited award space, high surcharges, and now a 2:1 Amex transfer rate, there’s little justification for choosing Skywards over alternative Membership Rewards partners. For most UK Amex holders, this change effectively removes Emirates from serious consideration.
Cape Town To Get Its First EDITION Hotel

Marriott has confirmed that The Cape Town EDITION will open at the V&A Waterfront in 2026, marking the debut of the EDITION brand in Africa.
The hotel is being developed in a newly constructed building directly on the water’s edge at the V&A Waterfront, next to what is about to reopen as the InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town.
The hotel will have 142 rooms and suites, alongside world-class dining, a signature rooftop bar, spa, pool, and event space. There will also be six private residences attached to the property, branded as The Residences at The Cape Town EDITION. Architecture is being handled by Shanghai-based Neri & Hu, working with local firm StudioMAS, with the usual EDITION emphasis on restrained luxury rather than overt branding.
Location is the real selling point. The hotel sits directly at the V&A Waterfront, somewhere we have stayed many times and loved it for the convenience and atmosphere. Some rooms should have views across the harbour towards Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, as well as out to the Atlantic. Guests will be steps from the Waterfront’s dining, retail and marina facilities, with a new public promenade running along the water.

The announcement continues a clear trend at the Waterfront, which has attracted a wave of international hotel brands in recent years. Cape Grace is now operated by Fairmont, The Table Bay Hotel is returning under InterContinental, Radisson Collection Waterfront has completed a major refurbishment, and Radisson RED has opened near the Westin. Independent options remain, including The Silo, One&Only Cape Town, and, for now, the Victoria & Alfred Hotel.
For Marriott Bonvoy members, this will likely become one of the most desirable hotels in South Africa once it opens, assuming award pricing and availability are not overly restrictive. Cape Town has long lacked a true top-tier Marriott option in a prime location, and EDITION fills that gap neatly.

Just to be crystal clear, that Virgin status match is only to “blue”, not “deep blue” regardless of what status you’re coming in from , and it’s only for 1 trip. After that trip you still have to re qualify from scratch. It’s more of a “status tester” than a status match 😜. Still it better than a kick up the bum 😆. It’s just written a bit disingenuously 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for flagging
Am Deep Blue Extras with VV, and I’d have to say, the daily specialty coffee and laundry service perks included in this match are indeed super practical.
