BREAKING: British Airways extend more Executive Club members and further discount on tier points

  • 20/04/2022
  • Michele

BA has been having a tough time recently, but not as tough as its customers that have faced cancellations, IT failures, and lost luggage. Most of the issues have been caused by a lack of staff. CEO Sean Doyle acknowledged that his customer and staff were “fed-up”. Now it seems like they are trying to make amends to their most loyal customers with a further extension for those that are due to renew their status later this year.

If you qualify you should be contacted by email and your account updated automatically.

It’s more complicated than before. Here are the details:

  • Gold Guest List with renewal dates July-December 2022 will be extended for a further  12 months
  • Gold members with renewal dates July-September 2022 will be extended for a further 12 months
  • Silver and bronze do not get any further renewal
  • However, Silver members with renewal dates July-September 2022 will given a 50% reduction in the amount of tier points needed (From 600 to 300 TPs)
  • Everyone else still gets the 25% reduction in tier points until 31 December. This also applies if you want to qualify for a higher status level.

25% reduction in Tier points until 31 December

You will not see any difference in the number of tier points required shown on your account if your renewal is after 31 December 2022. However, if you make 75% of the tier points needed by 31 December 2022, then you will get your status renewed for another year.

For example, my renewal is March 2023. I need to get 3000 tier points by then. However, if I get 2250 by 31 December, I will get my status renewed for another year and do not need to do anything else.

The thresholds you need to reach by 31 December are:

  • Bronze 225 TP
  • Silver 450 TP
  • Gold 1125 TP
  • Gold Guest List 2250 TP

The 25% reduction also applies to achieving a higher status tier. (For GGL you need to achieve 5000 usually to achieve status so it would be 3750 TPs with the reduction).

In all circumstances, the minimum eligible flights still need to be earned.

Eligible flights are defined as those flights marketed or operated by British Airways and those flights marketed and operated by Iberia.

  • ‘Marketed‘ means the flight will have a BA flight number (in your itinerary or on your ticket).
  • ‘Operated‘ means the aircraft that you travel on is a British Airways aircraft (including franchises and BACityflyer).
  • ‘Marketed and operated by Iberia‘ means the flight will have an IB flight number and the aircraft you travel on is an Iberia aircraft (including franchises).

Reward bookings and agency or industry discounted bookings are not eligible.

I will get Gold Guest List in about two weeks after a trip I leave for on Friday. Will my status get extended too?

    1. Michele says:
      20/04/2022 at 3:13 pm

It doesn’t sound like it from the guidance I have seen. It says that if you have already achieved enough points to renew for another year you will not receive a further year. I would assume that this situation is likely to be the same. If it’s not do let us know!

This is perfect timing as we are on the return sector of a double points holiday and was planning on finding an upgrade using points to hit my goal but now I can explore reward flights.
With the service on the outbound sector, BA has my business for the foreseeable

Would’ve liked to have seen the 50% threshold for Silvers extended for all those renewing at ANY point this year.

Especially when you factor in the debacle (s) of late and the fact that BA have publicly admitted to “intentionally inflating pricing on shorthaul routes to dissuade customers from flying”

I booked a trip for a friend this holiday and looked at prices LGW-ANT they came in at £280 more for the flights alone than for the flights AND a week in a 5* all inclusive resort. Yes there is heavy discounting on packages, there always has been, but for flights to cost hundreds of pounds more than when you include a premium holiday is beyond ludicrous.

I’ll hit the 25% reduction target for our ( family wide) renewals in December but I think the 50% should be applied for Silvers throughout 22 taking into account the state of things

I am close to silver and could get gold if this applies before 31st Dec. Would it work this way?

    1. Michele says:
      20/04/2022 at 8:00 pm

It depends what you mean and your expiry date. If you get 75% of the tier points needed for gold in your tier point year before 31 December then you would achieve gold for 1125 TPs

My expirt date is October. I will become silver end of month.

Most loyal customers you mean GGL, Am I right in reading that as I’m gold and my year end is December 2022 I do t get an extension or any reduction for next year. however as a loyal customer I shall qualify for gold again next week so got nothing for this round. It seems unless I’m reading it wrong it’s better to be silver or GGL.

Please forgive if I have miss read this.

    1. Michele says:
      20/04/2022 at 7:58 pm

No you don’t get an extension I’m afraid. Some people have overall had less extensions due to their expiry dates which is why it’s aimed at particular dates.

That’s a bummer, tier point year ends on 8th Oct 🙁

  7. Wing it One World says:
    20/04/2022 at 8:43 pm

Thanks Michelle for the response, yes seems like they don’t care as they don’t need to worry as one has already done the hard work for them, we put up with the poor service, offered. No replies to complaints no really improvements yet, loads and loads of promises, no fruition. Hey ho, help me out here What alliance do you think REALLY cares about their customers and would be please to have ones business. ???

    1. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 1:16 pm

I think there’s a lot more to it than one that cares about their customers. A lot depends on where you usually fly to, what class how much you fly and how much you are likely to spend. Lot of people have switched to Flying Blue so Skyteam as AF/KLM are very handy if you don’t live near London as they fly from plenty of regional airports. The link with Virgin is also useful. With Star Alliance Between Swiss and LH they cover quite a few regional airports too. But long haul LH is pretty poor in business.

Given the operational mess that is BA at the moment not extending everyone for twelve months is a bit cheeky. I could retain silver but I’m not going to bother trying and with the exception of my travel LHR-HEL, I will stick to *A and I’ll also join Finnair Plus to bank the miles somewhere. Or I could even use SAS for a fraction of the Finnair price.

  9. Nigel_H says:
    20/04/2022 at 10:32 pm

Hello Michelle, query regarding statement “However, Silver members with renewal dates July-September 2022 will given a 50% reduction in the amount of tier points needed (From 600 to 300 TPs)”

I thought retaining silver had been reduced down to 450 from 600 some months ago or did I miss another update ?

    1. Lou says:
      21/04/2022 at 8:41 am

Nigel you’re correct – I had already hit the 450 in March and have retained Silver. TBH I am a bit annoyed now as I deliberately flew on BA to make sure I hit the mark (my renewal is in September) and now find I didn’t need to. As the last two return flights I’ve had with them have been a nightmare, and I could have flown Emirates to Dubai for £300 less (and probably better service), I think this is really cheeky. No matter, I won’t be trying to retains status after this year with BA, so I don’t really care. I’ll just fly business on whatever is the best product for my route at the time. I’m done with them :(.

    2. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 1:12 pm

Yes it had but that was a reduction of 25% on the 600. They’ve now increased this to 50% off the base level of 600

  10. Gtellez says:
    21/04/2022 at 6:53 am

You mentioned that if it is applicable to you, you should have received an email. My wife is silver with renewal date Sept 8, but she hasn’t received any email. Does it mean that is target to some customers? I can’t find anything on BA website neither about the 300 TP reduction. She has 320 TP now, but only 3 flights with BA so far. She was not planning on taking any other flight before September with BA, but if the 300 reduction applies to her, we may do a quick weekend trip to somewhere. Thanks.

    1. Lou says:
      21/04/2022 at 8:42 am

She’ll need to have taken 4 flights to get Silver – I don’t think that has changed…

    2. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 12:56 pm

They probably have sent them all yet as they are done in batches.

  11. Lucy says:
    21/04/2022 at 12:03 pm

    Hi Michelle

Quick query – my husband is silver with a renewal date of 8th September. By then he will be Gold, so does that mean he will be Gold until September 2023 or is it extended to 2024 – just getting myself a little confused:). Thanks!

    1. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 12:55 pm

It’s a slightly grey area but the guidelines state that if you gain enough to qualify you won’t get an extra year so I’d argue that would also fit this scenario.

  12. Duncan says:
    21/04/2022 at 1:25 pm

So, for the third year running I’ll not be getting the email to extend my status because I’ve retained Gold by actually accruing tier points – imagine!

It would be nice if there was some recognition for those customers who have contributed to the business during the pandemic. e.g. an upgrade in status for a while or even a ‘joker’ to release redemption seats.

    1. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 1:32 pm

I agree they should also be doing something for people that have actually flown. Even an upgrade voucher for 1 would be better than nothing!

  13. Nick V says:
    21/04/2022 at 5:53 pm

Hi ! My membership year ends on 8th June 2022 (and card expiry in July 2023. I will be Gold come June 2022. . It is indeed complicated and good BA at least acknowledge their dire service issues.
Just wondered if these changes impact positively at all on my situ ?

    1. Michele says:
      21/04/2022 at 6:19 pm

Are you Gold now or you will achieve it by June?

      1. Nick V says:
        21/04/2022 at 6:32 pm

Hi Michele, I am Silver as of today – but would be Gold by 8th June (assuming BA apply my double tier points in time after I am back from a holiday late next month)

        1. Michele says:
          28/04/2022 at 5:06 pm

It says that if you qualify for status that you do not get an extra year so I’d assume they applies to those going up a tier as well so it’s unlikely you would get an extension.

      2. Nick V says:
        28/04/2022 at 1:02 pm

Any thoughts Michele? Remain a tad confused to be honest.

Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airp Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airport T2. Very impressed with the elegant feel to the lounge. It’s definitely a step up from the older style of No1. I’d go as far to say that it looks better than quite a few airline lounges. All drinks are included apart from champagne and there was a good selection of tasty food as well. Full review coming soon. #airportlounge #heathrowairport #luxurytravel #no1lounge
