And at the same time quietly increasing the spend required to generate a companion voucher from 10k to 15k from November this year. 50% devaluation.

The extra spend isn’t great is it! The £10k spend is a challenge for a lot of people as it is.
Is there any way to get a points bonus if upgrading from the free card?

I’m afraid not. If you have held ANY personal Amex card within the past 24 months then you don’t qualify annoyingly.
