Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel by Sofitel – Venice review

  • 24/08/2019
  • Michele

Anyone who has ever stayed at M Gallery by Sofitel hotels knows that they usually have a very characteristic décor as well as very strong focus on the city where they are located. The Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel did not disappoint my expectations!
The hotel is conveniently located for those arriving in Venice by train, as it is less than 10 minutes’ walk from the central station – Santa Lucia. In addition, the hotel is practically next to one of the city’s main canals and also close to a boat stop – the most common means of transport in Venice.

Check-in at Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel

We arrived at the Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel around 14:00 and headed straight for the check-in counter which, probably due to the time of day, was super quiet and we were immediately attended to. In a matter of minutes we had our room keys. The employee who served us was very friendly and recognized my Gold status at Le Club as soon as he accessed our reservation on the system. Once we finished checking in, he gave us all the details, such as breakfast hours and the discount we would have if we decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant one of the evenings.

At that time I also received the welcome drink voucher and one thing that pleased me was that my parents also received one voucher each, although they do not have Le Club status. I loved the kind thought – as my father was not drinking, guess who had to make the “sacrifice” of drinking it for him?!

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel review

I didn’t get a room upgrade, but they gave us two connecting rooms. The receptionist explained to us that at that time there were no connecting rooms available in a category above what we had booked. To be honest I didn’t care, because it was more important to me to be close to my parents than in a better room.

I asked for some information about the city and once again I was surprised by the helpfulness of the staff.  He gave us lots of tips on what to see and do and above all, it was very sincere. I didn’t notice any of that attitude that you sometimes see in Concierges trying to trick you into doing a tour where the hotel will probably receive a commission!

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Room

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bedroom

My room had two single beds and just like my parents’ room, it came with a side view. Not one of the best, but far from the worst. As for the room itself, it was not exactly large.

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bedroom Table

As well as the beds, there was an armchair and a table with a very large flat-screen TV set on the wall opposite the headboard – perfect for watching something before bed. There was also a kettle with tea which were complimentary, as were the two bottles of water that were replenished daily.

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Welcome Gift
Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Welcome Gift

Now comes the best part – the welcome gift that was a packet of… cookies! Not exactly generous…..Some chocolates or cakes on a decorated plate or some fruit would surely create a better impression! But anyway, Accor’s rules say that elite customers are entitled to a welcome gift, but it doesn’t specify a value or anything specific. Therefore, the hotel complied with the rule.

But back to the room, there were also bathrobes, slippers and a safe – in short everything you would expect from a luxury hotel. Like Sofitel, I really like the beds in M Gallery hotels. I find it very comfortable and at Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel it was no different.
Another plus point was the power outlets for recharging your electronics. They were easily accessible from both the bedside and the table. There was even a USB port on the side of each bed.

As my niece should have come with us but changed her mind at the last minute, I explained this at check-in and was eventually given a bottle of prosecco in compensation for her breakfast I had already paid. I liked the goodwill gesture from the hotel because in reality, I had no right to anything!

Goodwill gesture

One small detail where I think the hotel left something to be desired was the turndown service. They did it only the first night and did not show up for the next two days.

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bathroom and Bathroom Products

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bathroom
Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bathroom

The Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel bathroom was very spacious, with a waterfall shower and plenty of high-pressure water! Bliss! There was no bathtub, which although I understand it is important for some, it makes no difference to me since I never use it.

In addition to the normal products like shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, there was also a kit with other toiletries and even a loofah! You rarely find these in many hotels.

The bath products were from the C.O. Bigelow line and good quality – another plus point for the hotel!

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Breakfast

This was definitely one of the hotel’s strengths. The breakfast was very good! In addition to having a good choice of food, the staff serving the guests were very attentive and the space itself was beautiful and unique.

There was a wide range of hot dishes including fried eggs, potatoes, quiche, stuffed tomatoes, scrambled egg and bacon.

cold cuts
There was a selection of cold cuts, salad and cheese along with various juices, some being fresh.

fruits
The fruit was good quality with a nice choice of tangerine, kiwi, melon and orange.

I particularly liked the way they set out the coffee.

Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel Bar

On the ground floor opposite the reception was the hotel bar. It seemed to be very popular with guests at the end of the day.
One of the highlights of the bar is the view of the small canal in front of the hotel. In the evening it was lovely to have a drink at one of the tables by the windows and enjoy the view.

Conclusion

I really liked the hotel. I found the service excellent and the staff always very helpful and efficient. Overall our stay was very good and the minor issues were irrelevant. For those travelling with young children, the hotel even offers babysitting (for a fee, of course).

Inside the Papadopoli M Gallery Hotel review

When I return to Venice I will most likely stay at Papadopoli again. As I said at the beginning of the article,  the location of the hotel is excellent for those arriving in Venice by train, and very convenient for exploring the city.

The hotel is part of the Accor group so you can use Le Club vouchers to pay for all or part of your stay.

Having stayed at the Papadopoli in June I would totally agree with your review. Just to add in addition to being within a short walk to the station and public water taxi it is even closer to the airport express transfer bus which terminates in the Plaza Roma just behind the hotel. It is also possible to arrive in a private water taxi at the front of the hotel (expensive).
If you can possibly afford it, the deluxe rooms with a balcony overlooking a canal are well worth the extra.. The balcony is a nice size with chairs and table. We stayed for three nights and our bed was turned down each night.

Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airp Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airport T2. Very impressed with the elegant feel to the lounge. It’s definitely a step up from the older style of No1. I’d go as far to say that it looks better than quite a few airline lounges. All drinks are included apart from champagne and there was a good selection of tasty food as well. Full review coming soon. #airportlounge #heathrowairport #luxurytravel #no1lounge
