BA status extensions FAQs

Following my earlier article, I was overwhelmed with questions on here and social media. So rather than try to reply as I waited for clarity on a few issues, I have compiled a list of scenarios.

You have earned enough TPs now to reach a higher status with the 25% reduction

As soon as BA has updated its systems you should see the change to your new status. This should be done within two weeks.

Bear in mind that you still need the BA qualifying flights as well as the TPs. That is 2 for bronze and 4 for silver and gold. 

You have dropped status this year already

If you had dropped status at your last renewal, i.e. on the date of your tier point collection year which is always on the 8th of the month, then you will get an extra year at your current status. This includes those whose collection year ended on 8 June even though the card is valid until 31 July. 

If you dropped status due to BA cancelling flights it is worth contacting them as they are considering cases on an individual basis.

You have already achieved a higher status in your current TP year

If prior to the announcement you had made a higher status it would have been valid until the end of your next tier point year. eg Year ends 8 September 2020, gained Gold status from previous Silver in March 2020 which gives Gold until September 2021. You would then get an extra year on top of that, so you would have until September 2022 at Gold. However, you could not use the 25% TP reduction for the year starting 8 September 2022. 

How long does the 25% tier points off apply for?

The 25% off tier point thresholds only apply to membership years which end on or before 8 July 2022.

You will achieve a higher status in your current TP year

BA Executive club avios

You only need to get 75% of the TPs to renew or move up to the next level. The reduced tier point thresholds apply to all membership years which expire up to, and including, 8 July 2022. If you have already got that many TPs, you should see your status upgraded in the next two weeks. 

E.g. Your membership year expires in December 2020. You will receive an extension of one year added to your account in the next two weeks to 8 December 2021 (card Expiry 31 January 2021). Then before 8 December 2020 you gain 1125 in total giving you Gold until 8 December 2021. 

 

Will the extra year be a proper renewal or just an extension to my current year?

If you are a Gold Guest List Cardholder with perks such as jokers (or GGL redemptions as they are formerly known) or a Concorde Room card that you get at renewal, you will get a new set as you enter your free status extension year.

 

British Airways bonus Avios on the American Express Cardhow to use ba amex 2-4-1 two for 1 voucher

If you have a BA Amex card you should check your offers section as a new one offering bonus Avios has launched. The offer gives you an additional 2 Avios per £1 on the Premium Plus Card instead of the usual 1.5 per £1 spent. This is now better than as using the Platinum card for the specified stores. Amex Platnium is offering double Membership Reward points on purchases until 17 July. MR points convert into Avios 1:1. 

This offer is a lot more restricted though but does at least last until 12 September. This must be when it hits your account, not the date you make the purchase. Avios will post 

You can only get the extra points at:

  • Tesco
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Marks & Spencer
  • Deliveroo (online only)
  • Apple (online only)

The offer is targetted so not everyone may get it. It won’t count if you use the card to pay by PayPal or something similar. 

 

Exclusions:

  • Department store concessions and outlets are not included in the offer
  • Marks and Spencer exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, Foreign Currency, Gift Section
  • Tesco exclusions: Banking
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards.

    Could you answer this for me, please.

    BAEC Year starts on 8th Dec. I was Blue.
    In Jan I flew 4 sectors, cash flights. No Avios Redemptions. 1 domestic Club Europe rtn. 1 Long Haul in First rtn. 500TP earned. Promoted to Bronze.

    With the new 25% lower threshold, will my BAEC status be Silver in July? (450TPs). Or do I still need more qualifying flights? I can see it was 2 for Bronze and 4 for Silver. Does that mean 6 in total, or do they stack? Confused.

    1. From what I understand the setting, as for now, you would be a silver by now with your 4 BA flights and enough TP (with 450 TP). For you to re-qualify Silver for your next membership year 2021-2022, you’d be needing 4 BA/IB flights, and also pass the 450TP req.

    2. You should find you change to silver now. As soon as they update it. No you don’t need 6, just 4 in total for silver.

  3. Please can I ask a quick question? My tier point year ends on October 8 2020 does this mean that if I get 1125 points after that date (say between October 9 and May 2021) I could become Gold? Thank you

  4. I’m really confused by this article and the whole situation, hopefully someone can help clarify.

    I’m currently Bronze with a year end of 8th Dec 2020. I have 360 points and had planned to earn the additional 140 to get to silver by 8th Dec 2020. This is because I thought if I done so, I’d get to keep silver until 8th Dec 2021 anyway and then soft land to Bronze until Dec 2022 if I didn’t get enough points again.

    So, was I wrong in my thinking about getting to keep the status for the year after earning it? If not, I think I’m missing the point of the extension?

    The article says under the “You will achieve a higher status in your current TP year” question:

    So isn’t this just the normal process? You gain enough tier points within the year to move up a level, you get to keep that level for the following year?

    Last query, I now only need 90 extra points by 8th Dec 2020 to level up to Silver, is that correct?

    Shouldn’t the card expiry be 31 Jan 2022?

    And, didn’t you mean:
    Then before 8 December 2021 you gain 1125 in total giving you Gold until 8 December 2022.

  6. I don’t think I got an extension at all. My membership was due July 2020, and I achieved enough points to retain it anyway till July 2021. My account now says 0 points, membership expires July 2021, card expires August 2021, in other words same as normal. The only concession is I need 75% of normal tier points to renew but that’s unlikely to happen since there will be travel restrictions right through next year
