Oneworld joining date for Alaskan confirmed
On 31 March 31, 2021 Alaskan Airlines will become a member of the global airline alliance: oneworld.
“Every airline has pivotal moments in its history. Decisions that are made for future success and stability, and to provide increased service and a better travel experience for its customers. oneworld offers us those opportunities,” said Nat Pieper, Alaska’s senior vice president of fleet, finances and alliances. “We are officially joining a family with some of the best airlines in the world. The possibilities are tremendous.”
So if you are based in the UK why should you care? Well, if you plan to travel to the West Coast of the USA or Hawaii, it opens up more opportunities for earning tier points and Avios. Although Alaskan is already a partner with BA, there is a strange quirk which means that currently if you travel on an AA ticket but on Alaskan you do not get Avios or tier points. After the change, you will. Currently, you can earn Avios with Alaskan tickets but not tier points. After the change, you will earn both and be able to use your BA status to get all the oneworld perks when you fly with Alaskan such as linge access and extra luggage. The other benefit is that you will be able to redeem Avios for Alaskan tickets online. At the moment you have to call up.

There are a number of parking companies springing up which offer discounts on parking. Some can be a driveway, others can be a proper space. I often use Just Park for Heathrow as you can park at the Marriott on Bath Road for £11 a day and then get the free bus to the airport.
A new company has emerged called Your Parking Space. It has some good deals for London if you are thinking of a staycation. For example, 48 hours parking at the Hilton Park Lane is around £31. At Heathrow, parking in a hotel or office car park on Bath Road starts at £10 a day. You can find out more information here.

How do winter sun or ski destinations look?
Hopefully, by the middle of November we may be looking at some form of testing replacing quarantine, but in the meantime, if you are considering skiing or some winter sun, here is the latest chart for the rate of COVID per 100,000 people. The government had been working on 20 per 100,000 as the cut-off for quarantine but that seems to have gone out of the window in the last week or so (unsurprising given we are well over 100/100,000 in the UK).
What will happen this week is hard to predict. Given that the original plan was to allow countries with a similar amount or less of cases into the country without quarantine the 20/100,000 is no longer fit for purpose. I will be doing an updated version of the list of countries we can visit after tomorrow’s weekly changes.
