Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Hotel review – a luxurious surprise!

  • 21/03/2021
  • Michele

I have stayed at many of the hotels around Park Lane (reviews here) and often walked past the Sheraton. Sheraton has recently felt like a less luxurious brand than it once was, but the Sheraton Grand Park Lane always looked luxurious from the outside. So when I saw a great value rate advertised I decided to give it a try.

Location

The Sheraton Grand is not actually on Park Lane despite the name but instead is just around the corner on Picadilly. For me, this is a great location with plenty of great restaurants and bars within a short walk including Coya, a great Peruvian restaurant and the Amaranto terrace at the Four Seasons which is a lovely outdoor space for drinks or a light meal.

The nearest tube stations are Hyde Park or Green Park which are around 5 minutes walk.

Check-in at Sheraton Grand London Park Lane

Sheraton Grand Park Lane hotel review
Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Lobby

As I entered the hotel I was pleasantly surprised by the grandeur of the hotel. It certainly did not feel like any old generic Sheraton, but instead felt luxurious and boutique. Founded in 1927, the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane has an art deco interior including in the rooms, reflecting the hotel’s 1920’s heritage.

There was a one-way system on entering and the doorman offered assistance with my luggage which I declined.

You check in sitting down at a desk (with screens) which is very civilised. I had booked the Park View Superior room with a view of Green Park at a price of £199 per night. This is about three categories up from the basic room, with rooms starting around £170. I am a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite so I was hopeful for an upgrade given that the hotel was very quiet.

All the reception staff I encountered were fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble and they were all friendly and helpful during my stay, remembering my name when I asked something. I was given an upgrade to a suite with a fantastic view, so I was pretty happy with that! The receptionist explained how the hotel was operating. The Club lounge was shut so I could have breakfast in the Palm Court and then I could have drinks with canapes in the evening in the bar. I was also given a discount voucher for the bar.

It felt like they were taking Covid seriously with a one-way system around the public areas of the hotel. The lift arrangement was a little odd as the lifts are quite far apart so it’s hard to see which one has actually arrived!

There was even hand sanitiser IN the lift!

I was impressed with my room when I entered into a large living area with lovely views of Green Park and the London Eye. It was even more spectacular at night when everything was lit up.

In the living area, there was a seating area in front of the TV and a desk with plenty of sockets at hand. I loved that they had provided a mirror so there was somewhere convenient to dry your hair, so many hotels overlook this. A sanitising wipe was provided at the desk.

Also in the living area was a coffee machine and kettle plus plenty of complimentary bottled water. I liked that they had takeaway cups as well as mugs in case you wanted to take a coffee on a walk across the park.

The room felt cosy but yet still luxurious with its neutral and muted purple palette with silver accents.

The bedroom was also a good size with the usual Sheraton Signature bed which I find very comfortable. The room was also exceptionally quiet.

I had asked for the room to serviced daily. One day I had left the do not disturb sign on for most of the day so they left a bag full of clean towels, tea, coffee and toiletries which I thought was very clever.

There was plenty of storage space in the bedroom along with the usual slippers, bathrobe and safe.

The bathroom held a treat for me in the form of a Japanese toilet, complete with a myriad of settings to play with! Every time I walked towards it the lid would open which I loved!

The bathroom was a slightly strange arrangement with a completely open walk-in raindrop shower area by the bath. I’m never really a fan of these type of open arrangements, which effectively leaves you with a wet floor next to the bath. The bath itself was a little disappointing knowing that they have some lovely freestanding baths in some of their suites. However, I liked that the bathroom had an art deco feel that matches the rest of the hotel.

The shelf by the bath was also handy but there wasn’t really anything to put stuff within easy reach of the shower. Toiletries were Molton Brown and in generous sizes. I liked the little extras like the mouthwash and loofah.

There was a single sink with enough storage space on the countertop for all my overpacking of beauty products!

Palm Court

Breakfast was served in the Palm Court bar area which was gorgeous with its Art Deco theme and marble floor. I also loved the vaulted ceilings.  The Palm Court is one of the original features of the hotel from when it was completed in 1927. The tapestries, marble floor, bar and stunning ceiling details all date back to the late 1920s.

Palm Court

There was a wide choice for breakfast and the service was friendly if rather slow.

Eggs Benedict
Avocado toast

The food I had was generally good although I wasn’t convinced of a muffin with avocado versus the normal toast. (yes I ordered that again!). I think you need more of a crunch with something soft like avocado. The hash browns were completely delicious and the staff were more than happy to pop a couple of extras on my plate with the other dishes! I loved the silver teapot and jug which all just added to the air of grandeur. It was probably the poshest breakfast I have had in London!

Smith & Whistle Bar

Instead of the lounge, I was given coupons for drinks in the Smith & Whistle.  The staff were great in the bar and carried on topping us up even just after the time period had ended. The canapes were tasty but not exactly generous.

Normally in a Club Room you would get:

  • Courtesy breakfast with a hot buffet
  • Complimentary tea, coffee and snacks throughout the day
  • Complimentary beverages & canapés
  • 2 hours complimentary use of the Club Meeting Room

I tried some of the food in the bar as well, that was delicious and well presented. They also do some great cocktails.

The other restaurant in the hotel is called Mercante and in normal times open for breakfast lunch and dinner. There is also an outside terrace at the front of the hotel.

Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Facilities

Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Gym
Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Gym

There are not really many facilities to speak of, but if you wanted to visit a spa, there are plenty nearby. I am a fan of the Lanesborough in this area. There is a modern reasonably sized gym though.

Conclusion for Sheraton Grand London Park Lane

I was very surprised by the luxury and elegance of the Sheraton Grand hotel, which is not normally something I equate with Sheraton. I love art deco style so I really enjoyed the decor of the hotel. The hotel treated me very well as a Platinum Elite with a great upgrade and also were very helpful. Out of the hotels I have stayed in around Park Lane, this would probably be my favourite in terms of value for money and style.

Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airp Checking out the new No 1 lounge at @heathrow_airport T2. Very impressed with the elegant feel to the lounge. It’s definitely a step up from the older style of No1. I’d go as far to say that it looks better than quite a few airline lounges. All drinks are included apart from champagne and there was a good selection of tasty food as well. Full review coming soon. #airportlounge #heathrowairport #luxurytravel #no1lounge
