This week I’m reporting from Cape Town and the Winelands, one of my favourite winter sun destinations, which is currently great value. I’ll run through all the best hotels and which chains have hotels you can redeem points for, and whether they are worth staying at. As well as all the best things to do in Cape Town, I’ll be reporting from Franschhoek with its stunning scenery, foodie scene and vineyards.

I have always wanted to go but keep hearing it’s unsafe. We will be travelling with a young kid. Would you recommend it ?
I’ve been going for over 10 years and never had any issues. Most of the crime is more petty theft rather than violence. So I don’t take expensive things with me. There are areas that you would avoid but no different to any city. If you’d happily go to London then Cape Town is no different. The tourist areas are safe.
As Michele says it’s fine if you take sensible precautions. There is poverty in South Africa on a level not seen here so flaunting high value jewellery for example in the wrong setting (fine in the V&A, less so on the cape flats) is going to attract attention in a bad way.
We have just returned after 3 weeks and have already booked to go back in May. It’s hands down my favourite country in the world, not without its issues of course but they can largely be mitigated. I dare say you’re far more likely to encounter issues in Rome or Barcelona than you are in Cape Town and the surrounding areas. Franschhoek for example feels safer than just about everywhere in the U.K. to me!
The biggest issue at the moment as a tourist is load shedding which is the term they use for rolling blackouts. Most tourist related places will have generators so be unaffected but airbnbs etc likely won’t. Anyone going would be wise to download the Eskom se push app.
