Part 2: What price should you be paying for business class flights in 2026/27?

This is the second article in what I hope will be a semi-regular series looking at the historical lowest fares on popular routes with European starting points. I will also look at the next six months for the lowest-cost routings and airlines. If you want to see Part 1, which covered destinations such as NYC, LA, Cape Town, and Buenos Aires, you can find it here.

All prices quoted are for return business class fares per person. I have excluded Norse Airlines, as its premium product is premium economy, and Icelandair, whose business class does not have lie-flat seats.

The lowest prices featured can sometimes be a rare one-off sale for a particular reason, or the lowest forward fares may only be available on one or two departure dates, which you will need to bear in mind. So I would take them with a slight pinch of salt, but they give you a starting point. Also, if you are not familiar with the airline, make sure you check what their business class is like and be aware that some airlines do not serve alcohol even in business class.

I recommend using Google Flights rather than an online travel agent site. This is because the fares are mainly direct with the airlines, which I generally advise, particularly if flying via or to the Middle East, which still has the potential for disruption. Booking directly with the airline or a “proper” travel agency, rather than an online-only service that may have patchy customer service during disruptions, is usually worth a few extra pounds. There are other advantages of using Google Flights too,  such as being able to set alerts for price changes and seeing what type of business class seat is currently on the flight.

If we have missed a destination you would like to see, then let us know in the comments below.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong harbour

The route is highly competitive, dominated by Cathay Pacific, the Middle Eastern “Big Three” (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad), and European operators (Finnair, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air France/KLM).

Flying via Scandinavia works exceptionally well here. Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN) deliver the lowest historical premium baseline. However, flights can be more expensive to these airports versus flying somewhere like Dublin or Amsterdam and may require an overnight stay, which needs to be factored in.

Airlines like Finnair (routing through Helsinki) or Qatar Airways regularly launch flash sales out of Northern Europe to fill their connecting hub flights.  While Helsinki is expensive to fly to, you could consider using Avios to keep the cost down.

Meanwhile, London  commands a steep premium, heavily driven by strong business ties and high demand for direct, non-stop flagship products via Cathay Pacific or British Airways.

Historic fares over 12 months:

Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s) “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £1,145 (€1,365) Finnair / Qatar Airways £1,350 – £1,700
Stockholm (ARN) £1,190 (€1,420) Swiss / Air France £1,400 – £1,750
Dublin (DUB) £1,350 Etihad Airways / Qatar Airways £1,550 – £1,990
Paris (CDG) £1,460 (€1,740) Air India / Vietnam Airlines £1,650 – £2,200
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,590 Saudia / Lufthansa £1,790 – £2,350
London (LHR) £1,680 Gulf Air / Swiss £2,350 – £3,200

Current cheapest fares for next 6 months:

Departure City Next 6 Months Best Price Cheapest Month Primary Airline(s) Available Active Booking Strategy
Oslo (OSL) £1,290 November / March Finnair / Qatar Airways Highly efficient routing via Helsinki or Doha; books up fast 45+ days early.
Stockholm (ARN) £1,340 November Lufthansa / Turkish Airlines Leverages mid-week Star Alliance promotions to grab lowest-tier inventory.
Dublin (DUB) £1,460 March Etihad Airways / Qatar Airways Bypasses steep UK l flight taxes entirely, routing via Gulf hubs.
Paris (CDG) £1,595 November Oman Air / Air France Competitive one-stop connecting options; check total layover times before booking.
London (LHR) £1,840 November / March Gulf Air / Swiss Connecting through the Middle East or Europe saves £1,000+ over non-stop flights.
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,890 March Saudia / Qatar Airways Subject to strict local airport fees; requires targeting mid-week travel.

Beijing

Temple of Heaven

British passport holders can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, so it may be a good time to visit.

There is strong competition for both Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). The premium market to China’s capital is heavily contested by mainland Chinese flag carriers (Air China, China Eastern, China Southern), which aggressively drop prices to undercut European network legacy lines like Finnair, Lufthansa, Swiss, and the Middle Eastern hubs (Qatar Airways, Emirates).

As usual for flights eastbound, Scandinavia wins on price. Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN) deliver the lowest historical premium flight prices, routinely slipping below the £1,000 mark during flash sales from Chinese carriers or Finnair.

Historic fares over 12 months:

Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s) “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £895 (€1,070) Air China / Finnair £1,150 – £1,500
Stockholm (ARN) £940 (€1,125) China Eastern / SAS £1,200 – £1,550
Dublin (DUB) £1,180 Lufthansa / Qatar Airways £1,390 – £1,790
Paris (CDG) £1,295 (€1,545) China Southern / Air China £1,450 – £1,950
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,380 XiamenAir / Saudia £1,590 – £2,100
London (LHR) £1,490 China Southern / Swiss £1,990 – £2,850

Oslo (OSL) £1,090 November / March Air China / Finnair Highly efficient connections via Helsinki or direct routing; books up quickly.
Stockholm (ARN) £1,140 November China Eastern / SkyTeam Alliance Leverages mid-week promotional fare sales targeting the secondary leisure market.
Dublin (DUB) £1,295 March Lufthansa / Swiss Bypasses high UK  departure taxes completely; routes via Frankfurt or Zurich.
Paris (CDG) £1,410 November Air China / China Southern Aggressive pricing out of France from Chinese operators; check terminal rules carefully.
London (LHR) £1,590 November / March China Southern / Gulf Air Connecting flights save £1,000+ compared to non-stop premium direct options.
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,620 March Saudia / SkyTeam Alliances High airport fees; requires targeting mid-week travel windows. Saudia is a dry airline.

Tokyo

Tokyo used to be extremely expensive for air fares compared to much of Asia, but while direct flights still are, connecting flights have become quite reasonable. This is particularly true when departing from Scandinavia.

The route is dominated by Japan’s flagship operators (All Nippon Airways – ANA and Japan Airlines – JAL), alongside European network carriers (Finnair, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa) and the Middle Eastern hubs (Qatar Airways, Emirates).

Again, Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN) offer the lowest historical premium baseline, dipping to fantastic levels when European carriers like Finnair or Air France discount connecting flights to fill their East Asian network. As usual, London (LHR) commands a high base price due to intense corporate demand for direct, non-stop flights via ANA, JAL, or British Airways, as well as high taxes.

Historic fares over 12 months:

Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s) “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £1,210 (€1,445) Finnair / Air France £1,400 – £1,850
Stockholm (ARN) £1,265 (€1,510) KLM / Qatar Airways £1,450 – £1,900
Dublin (DUB) £1,395 Etihad Airways / Qatar Airways £1,590 – £2,100
Paris (CDG) £1,580 (€1,885) China Eastern / Air India £1,750 – £2,400
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,710 Saudia / Etihad Airways £1,900 – £2,550

Amsterdam (AMS) £1,995 June Saudia / Etihad Airways Substantial local airport fees; requires mid-week travel targeting.

Mauritius

BA sale june 2017
Mauritius

There’s a highly specialised premium market for Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in Mauritius. Because it is a long-haul, luxury leisure destination, the market lacks the corporate schedules of standard hub routes. Instead, it is fiercely contested by the Middle Eastern network operators (Emirates, Saudia, Turkish Airlines), flag carriers with strong regional links (Air France, British Airways), and the home carrier Air Mauritius.

The “Scandinavian Discount” also can work here for lowering travel costs. Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN) deliver the lowest historical premium entries, driven primarily by flash sales from Air France/KLM and Turkish Airlines looking to siphon passengers into their respective hubs. Conversely, London (LHR) commands steep pricing, heavily protected by high premium demand for direct, non-stop overnight flights via British Airways and Air Mauritius.

Historic fares over 12 months:
Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s)  “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £1,290 (€1,540) Air France / Turkish Airlines £1,550 – £2,100

Dublin (DUB) £1,640 May Air France / Turkish Airlines Bypasses high UK luxury departure taxes completely; routes via continental hubs.
Paris (CDG) £1,820 November Saudia / Kenya Airways Competitive connecting fares; review business class layout, stops, and connection lengths carefully.
London (LHR) £2,150 November / May Saudia / Kenya Airways Connecting routes save £1,200+ over premium direct BA or Air Mauritius options. Saudia is a dry airline.
Amsterdam (AMS) £2,210 May Saudia / Emirates Incurs standard high airport fees; requires mid-week travel targeting.

Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii.

If ever there was an example of the glory days of business class travel during the mid to late 2010s it was Hawaii. Gone are the days of the £1000 fares to Hawaii now, sadly. It was always an oddity given the length of the journey there. From being a very reasonable price before Covid, Hawaii is now priced at the level I would expect for a flight of 16+ hours plus connecting time.

So why have prices more than doubled? Around 2018–2020, Dublin was famous among European aviation geeks for “ex-EU” business class deals, regularly dropping sub-£1,200 round-trip fares to Hawaii via British Airways, American, or United. Today, finding a business class ticket on that exact same route for under £2,500 to £3,000 is rare.

This massive price spike is the result of a market reset in how airlines operate transatlantic and premium leisure routes. Before 2020, UK and European travelers routinely booked flights starting in Dublin because the Irish market had lower premium passenger demand and lower aviation taxes compared to London. Legacy alliances (like Oneworld and SkyTeam) aggressively slashed Dublin-to-US fares to steal customers from each other. Since the pandemic, airlines have completely overhauled their pricing algorithms. They realised travellers were exploiting these loops, and they aggressively closed the price gap between direct UK departures and connecting Irish departures to protect their profit margins.

Prior to Covid, the business class market was also all about business travellers, whereas since then the market has grown for leisure travelers and shrunk for corporate travel. So airlines no longer have to offer cheap tickets to leisure travellers to fill empty seats. With oil prices rising, airlines have also become more efficient with smaller aircraft rather than flying with empty seats.

Historic fares over 12 months:

Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s) “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £1,190 (€1,420) British Airways / American Airlines £1,450 – £2,100
Stockholm (ARN) £1,245 (€1,485) Lufthansa / United Airlines £1,500 – £2,250
London (LHR) £1,346 United Airlines / Delta Air Lines £2,400 – £3,400
Dublin (DUB) £1,390 British Airways / Aer Lingus £1,650 – £2,300
Paris (CDG) £1,680 (€2,005) Air France / Delta Air Lines £1,890 – £2,600
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,795 KLM / Delta Air Lines £1,990 – £2,750

Lowest fares for the next 6 months:

Departure City Next 6 Months Best Price Cheapest Month Primary Airline(s) Available Active Booking Strategy
Oslo (OSL) £1,350 December British Airways / American Airlines Requires tracking seasonal alliance sales; routes via LHR and US West Coast.
Stockholm (ARN) £1,410 December / January Lufthansa / United Airlines Leverages mid-week Star Alliance promotional windows to secure lowest tier base rates.
Dublin (DUB) £1,530 January Aer Lingus / British Airways Bypasses high UK departure taxes completely; routes via US East or West Coast hubs.
London (LHR) £3,003 November / December United Airlines / WestJet One-stop paths via West Coast hubs save £1,000+ over multi-stop arrangements.
Paris (CDG) £1,895 December Air France / Delta Air Lines Highly competitive one-stop connections via LAX or SFO; check layover lengths carefully.
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,980 January KLM / Delta Air Lines Incurs standard hub fees; requires booking well ahead of time.

Mumbai

The routes connecting Western Europe to India’s financial capital are fiercely contested by the Middle Eastern “Big Three” (Etihad Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways), Gulf network carriers (Oman Air, Gulf Air, Royal Jordanian), and European flag carriers like British Airways, Lufthansa, and SWISS.

I have also included Swiss departure hubs, as Geneva (GVA) and Zurich (ZRH) consistently undercut the baseline prices of London (LHR) and Amsterdam (AMS).

Middle Eastern airlines aggressively discount their connecting tickets out of Switzerland to siphon passengers away from SWISS, which operates premium direct flights from Zurich. Meanwhile, the Scandinavian hubs (Oslo and Stockholm) remain the lowest prices for European departures.

Historic fares over 12 months:

Departure City Lowest Price (Past Year) Primary Airline(s) “Good Deal” Range
Oslo (OSL) £1,120 (€1,340) Finnair / Qatar Airways £1,350 – £1,700
Stockholm (ARN) £1,175 (€1,405) KLM / Air France £1,400 – £1,750
Zurich (ZRH) £1,295 (CHF 1,550) Oman Air / Etihad Airways £1,450 – £1,990
Geneva (GVA) £1,420 (CHF 1,699) EgyptAir / Oman Air £1,590 – £2,100
Dublin (DUB) £1,450 Gulf Air / Qatar Airways £1,600 – £2,150
London (LHR) £1,539 Gulf Air / Royal Jordanian £1,945 – £2,800
Paris (CDG) £1,560 (€1,860) Oman Air / Air India £1,750 – £2,300
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,670 Saudia / Etihad Airways £1,850 – £2,450

Lowest fares for the next 6 months:

Departure City Next 6 Months Best Price Cheapest Month Primary Airline(s) Available Active Booking Strategy
Oslo (OSL) £1,260 November Finnair / Qatar Airways Highly efficient routing via Helsinki or Doha; books up 45+ days early.
Zurich (ZRH) £1,295 November / January Oman Air / Etihad Airways Connecting schedules undercut SWISS direct flights by over £500.
Stockholm (ARN) £1,310 November Air France / KLM Leverages mid-week SkyTeam sales targeting the autumn shoulder market.
Geneva (GVA) £1,549 November EgyptAir / Etihad Airways Requires a single stopover; ideal for avoiding steep airport premium fees. Note: EgyptAir is a dry airline.
Dublin (DUB) £1,580 January Etihad Airways / Qatar Airways Bypasses UK flight taxes completely, routing via Gulf networks.
Paris (CDG) £1,690 November Oman Air / Gulf Air Fiercely competitive Middle Eastern lanes; check layover schedules closely.
London (LHR) £1,720 January Gulf Air / Etihad Airways Connecting routes save £700+ over direct British Airways or Air India options.
Amsterdam (AMS) £1,840 January Saudia / Qatar Airways Incurs standard hub fees; requires booking well ahead.

Great article, very helpful, thank you Michele and greetings from sunny Cape Town (last minute out of Helsinki). Some notes I have produced that might be helpful.

How to Find the Cheapest Airfares: 7 Practical Steps

    * Search logged out/private — use a private or incognito window to minimise the effect of cookies and account history.

    * Start with Google Flights — use the date grid and price graph to compare fares rather than beginning with an airline’s own website.

    * Search flexible dates and whole months — moving your journey by even one day might produce a substantial saving.

    * Use Skyscanner for route discovery — try “Everywhere” and whole-month searches to identify cheaper routes, then verify the actual fare and itinerary.

    * Test alternative routings — ask ChatGPT to compare separate tickets, alternative connecting airports and airports within reasonable travelling distance of your origin and destination. Include the cost of ground transport when comparing the total price.

    * Book directly with the airline where practical — once you have found the best itinerary, booking direct generally makes changes, cancellations and disruption easier to deal with.

    * Keep checking after booking — if the fare subsequently falls, check the airline’s change/rebooking rules and any credit-card price protection to determine whether you might recover the difference. Always ask, you might be lucky.
