NEWS & OFFERS: Flash 50% less Avios for Aer Lingus flights, seats and bags BUT Aer Lingus Avios big charges increase

50% off Avios part and full pay cash tickets flash sale

If you were planning to buy any flights through Aer Lingus, now is the time to do it with a new flash sale with Aer Lingus. The promotion only lasts 72 hours and is live now. Aer Lingus flights, seats and bags can be purchased using 50% less Avios this weekend. You need to book by 15 October. 
 
As well as short haul routes to Ireland and long haul routes from Dublin, Aer Lingus also have three routes from Manchester to Barbados, Orlando and New York. 
 

How to use BA Avios for Aer Lingus

 

If you have British Airways Avios, you can use these to get the offer. You will need to open an Aer Club account and then log into avios.com. Then, under Manage My Account, you will find Cobine my Avios, where you can link your BA account and instantly transfer between the two. I am finding the Avios and Aer Lingus sites very flaky today, probably due to the volume of people using the offer. I’d suggest using a different browser if you have similar issues, as that seemed to solve the problem for me. I’d also suggest not leaving it until the last minute to try the offer. 
 
 

How to get the discount:

 

1. Log in to your AerClub account
2. Select the flight of your choice on AerLingus.com or the Aer Lingus App
3. Proceed to payment to see and select your discount. For example, a €29.99 fare is usually 4,725 Avios. However, you can book that flight for just 2,365 Avios this weekend. The Avios amount shown includes the discount.
 
 
The wording is a bit confusing as it seems to suggest you can use it towards an Avios Reward flight, but in fact, it means a cash ticket that you pay for with Avios in full or in part.

Aer Lingus have decent long haul seats with mainly aisle access, although their business class is a bit more basic than BA or Virgin, for example. 

 

Aer Lingus Avios redemptions – big taxes and charges increase

I also thought I would report on something that was picked up by HfP a few weeks ago, but now I have had time to investigate it fully myself. Aer Lingus used to be one of the cheapest ways to use your Avios when you booked through Aer Lingus rather than BA. Most taxes and charges were around £250 return for Dublin to the US versus £650+ for London to the US if you flew BA. To get the cheapest price, you had to book on avios.com as BA were charging around £420 return. This is still cheaper than flying BA, but it was more expensive than booking direct with Aer Lingus. 

Sadly IAG has now aligned the prices, so you will be paying around £420pp in taxes and charges wherever you book. The good news is that you can now use a BA Amex companion voucher flying Aer Lingus, which can be better value than flying BA. Just book through ba.com in the usual way, and it will show you if seats are available on Aer Lingus.
