Qatar announces huge aircraft order

Qatar Airways has struggled with a lack of aircraft for some time since the issues with the A350 paint. This meant that they were leasing certain aircraft from Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia as well as keeping the very old B777s that still have an ancient 2-2-2 business class. Today, it was announced that the carrier has placed the largest aircraft order in its history with Boeing. The order includes up to 210 Boeing widebody jets – 160 firm and 50 on option – which is the largest widebody order and the largest 787 Dreamliner order in the American aerospace company’s history.
Qatar Airways has also signed an agreement GE Aerospace for more than 400 engines, including 60 GE9X and 260 GEnx engines, with additional options and spares, to power its next-generation Boeing 777-9 and Boeing 787 aircraft – the largest widebody engine purchase in the history of GE Aerospace.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said: “We are happy to announce our agreement with Boeing and our partnership in the largest widebody aircraft order in Boeing’s history and the biggest aircraft order in our history. This is a critical next step for Qatar Airways on our path as we invest in the cleanest, youngest and most efficient fleet in global aviation. This is so we can meet the strong demand in the airline as we seamlessly connect passengers to the world better than anyone.”
He continued: “After two consecutive years of record-breaking commercial performance and with this historic Boeing aircraft order – we’re not simply chasing scale; we’re building strength that will allow us to continue to deliver our unmatched products and customer experiences. We thank our partners at Boeing for answering the call and look forward to a future of continued smart growth together.”
The order includes:

130 B787 Dreamliners. The latest B787-9 aircraft have Premium suites rather than QSuites due to the width of the fuselage, so I’d expect these to have the same. You can read our review here.

30 B777-9s, the world’s largest twin-engine airplane that is designed to set new standards in efficiency by reducing fuel use and emissions by 25% compared to the airplanes it replaces. These are due to have the Next Gen QSuite which you can read about here.
There are also options for an additional 50 B787 and B777X airplanes.
Qatar Airways already operates more than 150 Boeing airplanes, including B777 and B787 passenger jets. With this new purchase, Qatar Airways will become the largest Dreamliner operator in the Middle East.
Leading Hotels of the World – Leaders Club up to 100% bonus

Leading Hotels of the World have a pretty decent loyalty scheme with perks such as a guaranteed upgrade after only one stay. I recently stayed at the above hotel and got a very nice upgrade on my stay.
They have an offer which is due to end on 20th June, which may be of interest if you are likely to book a Leading Hotel of the World. These bonuses are the same as the last offer they ran near Christmas.
Depending on how many points you buy, you can get up to 100% bonus on the points. The bonuses are as follows:
Buy or Gift Points | Bonus points |
Buy or Gift 2,000 – 11,000 Leaders Club points and get 50% more | 50% |
Buy or Gift 12,000 – 29,000 Leaders Club points and get 75% more | 75% |
Buy or Gift 30,000 – 50,000 Leaders Club points and get 100% more | 100% |
As an example of the value, with the lowest bonus you can get 6000 points for $480. This is enough for a night at the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Hawaii. Rooms usually range from $595 upwards with cash. Obviously, it is worth researching in advance how many points you would need and what the cash rate would be.
