Qatar/ Virgin Australia flights available to book and 20,000 Avios bonus

Starting today, you can book Virgin Australia’s new services to Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth from Doha for travel from June 2025, with Melbourne set to join later that year. Melbourne to Doha will be on sale in early January 2025 for travel later in the year. You can now earn and redeem Avios on these flights too.

There will be 28 new weekly services to Australia from Doha. These flights will be operated by Virgin Australia using Qatar Airways’ spacious Boeing 777-300ERs, with their QSuite Business Class. Obviously, you won’t get the Qatar service, but you should get the QSuites.

The Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways partnership is still pending final regulatory approval and dramatically increases the number of flights you can earn and redeem Avios on to Australia. You’ll earn the same amount of Avios that you would when travelling with Qatar Airways and you can also earn or spend Avios on any flights in the Virgin Australia network. You will not earn BA Tier points, though.Privilege Club members can enjoy complimentary lounge access, priority check-in, priority boarding and more, depending on tier or status.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said that, if approved, the investment will support a collective ambition between the two airlines to deliver the best service and value to Australian customers.

“We are proud to support Virgin Australia with their ambition to return to long-haul international flying, a crucial next step in their successful transformation programme,” he said.

Special launch fares and promotions are now live on the Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia websites. You will need to book via Qatar to earn the bonus Avios.

You can collect 20,000 bonus Avios for a return trip in Business Class (or First) and 10,000 bonus Avios in Economy Class. All you need to do is book a return trip on an eligible flight by 20 January 2025, for travel between 12 June 2025 and 30 September 2025. Eligible routes operated by Virgin Australia with either a QR and/or a VA flight code: to/from Doha – Sydney, Brisbane, Perth. (Qatar Airways flight number: QR8400, QR8401, QR8404, QR8405, QR8406, QR8407 and Virgin Australia flight numbers VA1, VA2, VA15, VA16, VA21, VA22)

While final regulatory approvals are pending, you are fully protected with options for either refunds or re-accommodation on suitable alternative flights and reimbursement for reasonably foreseeable costs if the new services are not able to go ahead as planned.

Last chance – 50% bonus on buying points with Leading Hotels of the World

Leading Hotels of the World have a pretty decent loyalty scheme with perks such as a guaranteed upgrade after only one stay. They have an offer which is due to end on 13 December, which may be of interest if you are likely to book a Leading Hotel of the World.

Depending on how many points you buy, you can get up to 100% bonus on the points. The bonuses are as follows:

Buy or Gift Points Bonus points
Buy or Gift 2,000 – 11,000 Leaders Club points and get 50% more 50%
Buy or Gift 12,000 – 29,000 Leaders Club points and get 75% more 75%
Buy or Gift 30,000 – 50,000 Leaders Club points and get 100% more 100%

As an example of the value, with the lowest bonus you can get 6000 points for $480. This is enough for a night at the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Hawaii. Rooms usually range from $595 upwards with cash. Obviously, it is worth researching in advance how many points you would need and what the cash rate would be.

You can find the offer page here.

Every other year, we fly with Qatar to Australia in business and credit to BA so that we earn enough TP to retain our Silver membership. Does this mean we have to be extra careful which flights we book in case we accidentally end up on a Qatar flight operated by Virgin Australia instead of one where we can credit to BA? Or is it just a matter of crediting to BA as usually and getting TP and Avios?
