NEWS & OFFERS: Heathrow makes new pay offer, Virgin Points offer and new Avios collection airline

  • 11/04/2023

In this post:

  • Heathrow makes new pay offer
  • Virgin Points – earn 10 points per £1 with Booking.com
  • New way to earn Avios through BA Executive Club

Heathrow makes new pay offer

The strike by Unite at Heathrow’s T5 has now ended and actually turned out to cause minimal disruption. This was down to a large number of managers staffing the security points. Obviously, this would not be sustainable forever if the strikes kept happening. 31 March was one of their busiest days since 2019, with 221,606 passengers travelling through the airport.

Unite surveyed the security staff at Heathrow, and according to them, a large number are considering leaving. Heathrow already has an issue recruiting new staff for these roles, so in my opinion, they need to start paying a decent rate and then may actually be able to staff the terminals at the pre-Covid levels. They already have raised passenger charges during Covid and are trying to raise them further, yet seem unwilling to pay enough to recruit and retain what are essential staff.

Unite’s survey of over 750 security officers revealed that one in three are planning to leave their jobs within the next six months, while almost half of the respondents are unsure whether they will continue to work at Heathrow.

Heathrow has now confirmed that they have made an offer which, so far Unite has not presented to its members. The statement said, “We have listened to colleagues on the pay offer and have proposed changes they have asked for. This is a materially different proposal, which we believe Unite should let their members have a say on.”

I have not seen any response from the union yet, so we don’t know if it will be put to the vote or rejected.

Virgin Points – earn 10 points per £1 with Booking.com

Virgin Red members can earn 10 points for every £1 spent with Booking.com on UK and European stays (normally eight points per £1 spent) when they book before 1 May 2023.

Existing Booking.com customers will also be able to access their Genius benefits, as well as being able to earn Virgin Points, on top of this exclusive offer. Obviously, if you then pre-pay a booking with your Virgin credit card, you could earn even more. I do personally use Booking.com as once you get to the higher genius levels you do start to seem some substantial discounts on hotels.

Find out more at https://www.virgin.com/virgin-red or download the Virgin Red app on your smartphone.

New way to earn Avios through BA Executive Club

China Southern B777 business class

British Airways Executive Club members will now be able to earn Avios when flying on China Southern operated/marketed flights. Previously, you could only collect Avios on China Southern flights operated under a British Airways flight number. Now you can collect Avios on China Southern’s CZ flight numbers too. However, you will not be able to collect tier points when booked with a CZ flight number.

You can read our review of China Southern here.

You can find the relevant rates of earning here.

It’s not a new pay offer, they are talking about the offer made to the Unite on the 30th of March, Heathrow just want Unite to ballot their members on it, which Unite are refusing to do.

LHR must not be allowed to raise passenger charges so much as a penny until the place is properly staffed. Dividends and bonuses are the compromise here and travellers should not be paying more for the current level of service. Restoring it to pre-Covid levels doesn’t fill me with joy, it’s not as if it was great back then.

I agree although just having the first wing open with both lanes and transfer fast track would be a start!

Have just travelled through first wing and both lanes open. I was most surprised at how quiet the wing was during school holidays. Concorde room also very quiet.

Do not rely on getting anything from booking.com. I stayed in a hotel on 1st October 2022 and and was promised 4% via Curve. I am still waiting even though it has been sitting in ‘pending’ for months. Curve is blaming booking.com.

    Dear Michelle,
I would strongly suggest you #1 Dona thorough review on the text before publishing ( an example: “They already have raised passenger charges during Covid and are trying to raise them further, yet seem unwilling to pay enough to recruit and retain which are essential staff”), and #2 if you are aiming to be a journalist, perhaps act as such and report impartially and objectively, rather than present your opinion. Out of curiosity, do you know what Heathrow’s offer was initially? I don’t. How can I make a determination whether that’s fair? It’s easy to write, harder to write and report well. Good luck.

I’m not a journalist when writing for my own site. It’s my own website so I’m entitled to write my own opinion. And yes sometimes there is the odd typo. I only have myself checking it and I’m generally writing 1-3 articles daily so sometimes there are mistakes as while I use grammarly it sometimes misfunctions. So in your example you are getting angry because it says which instead of who?

It would appear that you don’t agree with the strike and therefore are hitting out at me because I can see that even if they don’t deserve a pay rise Heathrow need to pay a rate to attract and retain staff. If it does not align with your views then you could just simply scroll past that article. Or find an article that does. Like a national newspaper where they have a whole staff editing the paper rather than just a single person trying to do most of it themselves. But if you think they will be unbiased then good luck with that.

Those flying in First class or holding Gold Guest List or Premier status can access the exclusive lounge. The machine precision weighs each ingredient in a special “Turbine” martini recipe from top class mixologist @mrlyan Although the recipe calls for Aviation Gin you can substitute it for another gin or vodka.
