The eagerly awaited Qatar sale is hopefully not what is being offered now as ‘where will you go next?’ Whilst there are some great bargains depending on your starting point, the travel period is severely limited. The promotion appears to be an extension of the offers that I reported from Sweden here. Unfortunately you must travel by 21 June 2017, so it will be of little interest for those of us who have been waiting for a bigger sale.
There is one bit of good news though. Mastercard cardholders also receive up to an additional discount of up to 15% when they purchase tickets using their Mastercard during the Qatar Airways sale. The positive note is that this part of the offer is valid for booking until 21 May 2017 for travel until 10 December 2017. Just use the code ‘MASTERCARD’ to get the discount.
You may want to try looking a prices beyond the promotion sales period on ex EU. This may get you a decent price anyway. For example, the cheapest flights from Stockholm to Auckland are around £2300 next February. If you managed to get the full 15% discount this would take it down to £2070 which is still a respectable fare. Average prices from the UK are around £3000.
You can of course get BAEC tier points and Avios on Qatar and in fact, one return flight in business class to Asia on Qatar would almost get you to BAEC Silver with 560 tier points. If you have never done an Ex EU flight you can read my guide here.
The UK sale is generally pretty disappointing with only economy fares seeming to be included.
